Why I started and you should too

I started because I wanted to see if I could grow an audience but try this time. Through listening to the seanwes podcast (which I highly recommend), Ben and Sean provide much of the motivation I needed. They made me believe I could do it, but they warn it won’t be easy. Down to their words of wisdom, I was motivated to write. The messages Sean and Ben consistently mention are simple, it all starts with writing, you have to be consistent and show up every day.

While there are signs of my audience growing. I don’t expect that to begin to form for at least another year. However, aside from building an audience, I’ve wanted to improve my communication and writing skills. It’s a real challenge to communicate how to do things, in a way that the majority of people can understand. I’m pleased with the progress so far.

It’s possible to write every week

To produce an idea every week can be difficult, especially when you have a full time job and other commitments. It’s largely down to how much you learn yourself, but other factors can contribute. It’s important you have the motivation to learn and teach. Equally, you need to be doing work that challenges you.

Part of this year is to consider where my focus is, however, due to the difficulty some weeks I am hesitant to niche down. You may encounter this struggle as you don’t always have the control over what’s happening in work and life. I do have some tips that help generate topics. Which I’ll cover some in more detail.

  • Speak to people interested in learning what you do
  • Spend time generating ideas for posts
  • Think through what you’ve learnt recently
  • Is there something you have had curiosity to learn
  • Go for a walk
  • Consider that topic you’re putting off in your mind
  • Just see an idea through
  • Not every post needs to be the lengthiest and most thought out
  • Make notes of what you have learnt
  • If you start a new project make notes, take screenshots and pictures

Speaking to people interested in what you do

This is crucial; I haven’t done it enough. I’m hoping to do it more and work harder at doing that. It’s simple if you speak to people interested in what you do and there is an area they ask to understand more. That’s a topic for you to share your knowledge.

Listening is an important skill. If your posts are about the struggles people are having, they will see you as an expert. Your knowledge will become a consistent source for those readers.

Generating ideas for posts

If you come to a blank page with an idea to write about, you’re not in the right frame of mind. Trying to write without a purpose, is attempting to do two important things at once. You should have the idea, to focus purely on the execution. So spend some time thinking about what you’ve learnt recently and conversations you’ve had.

Write down the ideas that come to mind, with an outline where you can. Ideas can come at any moment, not only just spending the time to think of them.

Go for a walk

Many of my best ideas that I’ve thought that would make a great post have come from walking, in the shower or doing some task that just allows your mind to wander. As mentioned in the previous paragraph, capture these ideas as soon as you can. Do not rely on your memory!

Learning

Aside from talking to people for ideas. Learning will be the biggest area for your writing. If you don’t learn, you will quickly run out of topics. If you have a willingness to learn, the things to write about will always come to you. It’s a necessity to have that willingness.

Your perspective is unique, so don’t be afraid to share knowledge on topics that someone has covered already. You may be the person that explains it in such a way that helps someone to have an ‘aha’ moment and get it. I struggle too, but it becomes easier to put aside with time.

A benefit of writing tutorials, is the need for them to be without error. Otherwise, you’d be guiding people wrongly. This learning or research helps brush up your knowledge and helps you to think differently.

That said, when you make an error, it opens a discussion. You can correct any mistakes, and credit the person who helped.

Within web related technologies there is so much to learn. CSS and JavaScript will always gain new features, so you can get a head start by reading the specifications and presenting it in an easy to understand way.

Not every post has to be the best

When I say this, I mean you don’t have to have the longest, most in depth post written every week. Of course, the post still has to be valuable. Otherwise, it isn’t worth wasting yours or the readers time.

I wrote a quick tip for CSS on removing excess letter spacing. I kept forgetting the technique so it served as a reminder for me. However, I expanded upon it as someone tweeted me with an issue. I’ve since had someone email with another problem to expand upon in the post. I knew the solution might not cover all bases. I’m happy I wrote it because with the two people that contacted me, they have helped to expand upon that topic.

What’s next

Search is my highest source of traffic, which is no surprise, as I don’t do any promotion of my posts. However, the nature of my posts leads to people leaving after they have found their answer.

I’m working on a redesign, to get out during this year. I need to set myself a deadline, but first I need to plan it properly. I have a few goals and outcomes I want to achieve.

  • Position myself a designer
  • Build my confidence
  • Become a better writer
  • Introduce higher quality content
  • Make more of an impact with content
  • Retain users for longer
  • Encourage users to view other pages
  • Post featured images to dribbble
  • Explore the idea of screencasts

These things will force me to get uncomfortable with the thought of sharing more. It will challenge me to become a better designer and writer, and produce higher quality content. What I’m currently doing this would more than double my current workload. It would make it tough to redesign the website, so this will be my focus as well as maintaining one article a week.

Ending with statistics

Most people are interested in statistics so I will share them. They’re a small token of progress. I only receive a tiny amount of traffic, but it’s improving steadily. I would like to see improvement in direct visits, over search. That will be the best indicator of growing my audience.

Starting in January 2015 the previous month December 2014 had a tiny 715 visits. I doubled that in July, and each month improved by at least 10% (up until December) and as high as 22%. The only month that didn’t see an increase was February.

Of those 52 posts, the most popular was creating a horizontal scrolling responsive menu. It was far and away the most popular, with 4813 visits.

Most notable browser popularity

In comparison to last year, this isn’t hugely different. Traffic from IE increased 6x. However, that’s still a tiny percentage. Chrome has become more dominant, but that’s not surprising really. Mobile is on the up, also seeing a 6x increase, but still a small percentage.

Top 10 countries

Last year the US was more of a leader in my audience and had seen slightly less traffic this year. Everyone else has increased. It’s nice to see it grow in those areas.

On to the next year

A year ago I thought I would just give it a try unannounced and see how it went. I’m pleased with this start and have a lot to work towards the goals I have set. I have some things to consider regarding how to allow the right balance of focus on a redesign and moving forward producing content at high quality.
